Pluto

Mean Distance From Sun

5,906,380,000 kilometers (3,670,050,000 miles)

Orbital period around the Sun

247.92 Earth years (90,553 Earth days)

Distinguishing features: The smallest, coldest, and most distant planet from the Sun, Pluto has a dual identity, not to mention being enshrouded in controversy since its discovery in 1930. On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) formally downgraded Pluto from an official planet to a dwarf planet, which is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

Pluto is also a member of a group of objects that orbit in a disc-like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune called the Kuiper Belt. This distant region consists of thousands of miniature icy worlds with diameters of at least 1,000 km and is also believed to be the source of some comets.

Zodiac Sign Rulership: Scorpio

Pluto is the outermost planet in the solar system and therefore the slowest moving. At certain times however, due to the high eccentricity of its orbit, it comes closer to the earth than Neptune. This is the case up until the end of the 20th century. At the same time it is passing through Scorpio, the sign that it rules. This is a very critical period in world history, since Pluto represents powerful forces of death and destruction or change and transformation, which are now at their strongest. This can lead to destruction through nuclear war or our pollution and exploitation of our planet. On the other hand it can lead to the death of the present political and economical systems and the birth of new political and economic systems and a transformation in international relations and our relationship to our planet. By the time Pluto has left Scorpio in 1999 the issue will probably be decided one way or the other.

In the individual birth chart, Pluto’s sign represents the urge for power and control either over ourselves or others. It is the need to penetrate beneath the surface of experience, to reveal hidden motivations and repressed desires. The position of Pluto in the chart indicates our capacity for self-regeneration or rebirth and our attitude towards beginnings and endings and birth and death, either actual or symbolic. Pluto can be expressed as the acceptance of our need for complete transformation in some area of our life, and the courage to face our deepest compulsions and hang-ups. Or, it can be expressed as the wilful manipulation of others, ruthlessness and an infatuation with power.

Leo Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1937 -1958) that, apart from many other things, saw World War II and the advent of nuclear power and the atomic bomb. All this shifted the world into a process of transformation from which it could no more retreat than a nuclear power station could be closed down overnight. This transformative power (which forces us to contact the hidden origins of all things) is now unleashed and your personal role in this global psychodrama is revealed below.

Virgo Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1956 – 1972) that grew up into a world where revolutionary changes began to take place with regard to the food that we eat and the way we work. Processing and pre-packaging of food has led to impurities and health hazards.

Work has been automated and ‘the personal touch’ has been removed. The introduction of more efficient means of birth control gave rise to an illusion of sexual inviolability when quite the opposite (sexual abuse) has increased. All these matters were in fact just crises waiting to happen so that they could be – or rather had to be – duly dealt with. You are a bristle in a gigantic new broom that will sweep clean. At some point you may well get obsessed over work and health as a deep sense of service and purity arises from your unconscious mind.

Libra Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1971 – 1984) that grew up into a world where revolutionary changes began to take place with regard to marriage and social values. Being a child of a single parent family would be a typical example of your generation’s social conditions.

In any event, you grew up in an atmosphere of great uncertainty as to what social justice and the social norm were. Essentially, as a generation, you are re-writing the social rulebook, which unavoidably means being without, or refusing to observe, the old rule book.

Scorpio Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1983 – 1995) that witnesses the inevitable consequence of mankind’s mishandling of power and resources. During this period crises threaten our very existence and it’s only through a true and deep understanding of what power and transformation actually mean that we avert disaster and deliver ourselves into a new era.

Sagittarius Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1995 – 2008) that sees a coming together of the essence of all valid world religions and the demise of the more spurious ones. This marks the birth of a world religion that transforms our attitude to life through a combination of science and mysticism.

Capricorn Pluto

the Plutonian generation (1762 – 1777) that witnessed the birth of new forms of government, most notably in the USA with the American Declaration of Independence.

Aquarius Pluto

the Plutonian generation (1777 – 1799) that witnessed the transformation of the condition of the common man by granting him the power of freedom to do and act as he chose – or through him having to fight for it. The most notable examples of this being the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution.

Pisces Pluto

You are a member of . . .

the Plutonian generation (1799 – 1823) that witnessed the artistic and cultural expression of the mystical and universal.
